Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Can you move my website?

As part of our Managed Migrations service, we’ll move your website from your existing host over to Dot Engine.

This service is available for the vast majority of accounts, please contact us so we can perform a pre-migration assessment of your website.

Are you PCI-DSS Compliant?

Yes, DotEngine’s hosting is fully PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliant and uses ISO 27001-approved data centres so will pass PCI compliance checks.

If your business takes card payments, your hosting needs to be PCI compliant.

To accept, store and process debit/credit card information, the hosting provider must be compliant with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS). These standards were introduced to reduce credit card fraud.

The PCI Security Standards Council are responsible for ordering regular tests on hosting providers. They test for vulnerabilities where hackers could potentially steal cardholder information. Stack United consistently pass these independent audits.

Do I have to buy a domain name?

You do not have to buy a new domain name if you already own one. If you do not already own a domain name you will need to buy one as part of the hosting purchase process, but don’t worry, our system makes the whole process as easy as possible and you will not need to configure anything to get started.

Is mod_rewrite enabled?

Yes! As standard, mod_rewrite is available and installed on our WordPress and Linux servers.

Apache-style rewrite rules are also usable on our Windows platform too.

Can I host videos and audio files?

The Shared Hosting Services allow you ‘unlimited’ server space for normal routine “non-file-distribution” web usage. For websites that allow downloading of video, audio or other files we reserve the right to impose a bandwidth limit of 50GB per calendar month.

If you need more than 50GB of bandwidth per month for videos and audio files we recommend you use an object storage solution such as Amazon S3 or Digital Ocean Spaces.

Cloud Hosting

What is cloud hosting?

Your websites are hosted on powerful servers, in secure, managed data centres which store a large number of servers and are configured to provide the best possible service. Load balancing and other technology ensures that your websites are accessible quickly and reliably, far more cheaply than buying and managing servers yourself.

How can I create a website with my hosting?

There are a number of ways to create a website using our hosting. If you already have a website hosted on Linux servers then contact us to arrange a free transfer of your site to your new hosting. If you do not have an existing website and you have web design skills you can code your site offline and FTP it to your hosting, or use the file manager provided with your hosting. If you do not have web design skills you can easily install a Content Management System, such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal, via our one-click software installer and take full control of your design and content that way. If this looks too complicated for your needs you can also use the website builder, using the supplied templates to create your website.

Can I host more than one website?

All our hosting packages enable you to host more than one website on your hosting account unlike many competitor hosting companies. The number of permitted websites is determined by the hosting package you purchase, but you can upgrade your hosting package at any time if you find that you need to host more websites than you initially budgeted for. You will need a unique domain name for each website.

Can I use WordPress or other applications?

Yes, you can use applications like WordPress or Drupal with your hosting. You can even install 70+ applications incredibly easily using the one-click installer included in your control panel. Your WordPress site will fly using our Linux Cloud hosting, but if you already know that your website is only going to use WordPress we recommend that you order our WordPress hosting package and enjoy even faster WordPress-optimised hosting.

Domain Names

What is a domain name?

A domain name makes it easy for people to find your website. Domain names are unique so they can point to a website hosted on a particular server, or cluster of servers. They comprise two parts; the first part is unique and chosen by you and the second is the extension which often corresponds to a country.

Do I have to buy a domain name?

You do not have to buy a new domain name if you already own one and transfer it to us when you order your hosting. If you do not already own a domain name you will need to buy one as part of the hosting purchase process, but don’t worry, our system makes the whole process as easy as possible and you will not need to configure anything to get started.

Are there any rules about choosing a domain?

Choosing a suitable domain name can be difficult because they are unique and once registered they are owned by that person or business until left to expire, with the option to renew the domain registration before it expires. Domain names must also be no longer than 63 characters long, can only include the letters A-Z, numbers 0-9, and hyphens (although hyphens can’t be the first or last character of the domain name).

I already have a domain name, can I transfer it to my new account?

You can transfer any domain names you already own to your new hosting at any time. You will need to carefully follow the different processes required by the people who run the top level domains which are in place to confirm ownership and ensure the safe transfer to us. Depending on the domain extension (for instance .co.uk, or .uk domains) you can transfer your domain name to us for free, other extensions will be charged but renewal will not be necessary until a year after the transfer date.
